Royal Navy Fleet:
Admiral Collister - HMS Guardian, "Postillionen" Frigate, 20
Admiral Eliblo - HMS Roberts, "Postillionen" Frigate, 20
Vice Admiral Walker - HMS Discovery, "Postillionen" Frigate, 20
Captain Jones - Indiana Senior, "Postillionen" Frigate, 20
Captain Quilliam - Etoile. "Bermuda" Sloop, 8

Spanish Fleet:
"Conquistador" Frigate, 40
"Conquistador" Frigate, 40
"Deliverance" Frigate, 36
"Hercules" Frigate, 40
"San Mateo" Galleon, 44
"San Mateo" Galleon, 44
"San Mateo" Galleon, 44
"Valiant" Third-Rate, 66

Admiral Collister spotted a Treasure convoy of eight sail off San Juan. Moving to engage he got word to Captain Jones, conducting trade in that area, declaring the presence of the convoy. Rendevouzing of San Juan, the two were jumped by a pirate frigate. The decision was made to evade combat with the pirate and make more sail in pursuit of the Treasure convoy. After disengaging Admiral Collister was the first to find the Spanish convoy and quickly moved in for battle. Captain Jones followed shortly thereafter but was unfortunately caught in a strong wind and (spawned) was caught 200 yards to the convoy's lee.

Captain Jones, far Postillionen frigate, finds himself in a most precarious position!

The decision was made to make full sail to the north and maximize the distance between the two Navy frigates and the enemy convoy. This would hopefully separate the faster Spanish escort ships from the galleons.

The impressive view from the mainmast of the HMS Guardian a few moments into the battle.

Having run a good 2000 yards, the Spaniards had clearly broken formation as the faster escort ships set sail to chase. Captain Jones was ordered to continue northwards with the Spaniards in tow, while Admiral Collister bore hard-a-starboard, hoping to spin round and gain the attention of one or two of the foremost enemy frigates. The plan worked perfectly as the Admiral sped across the outer perimeter of their line and drew away a Conquistador frigate. Sailing away at full sail, both blazing away broadsides, they broke away from the main portion of the enemy fleet.

At this point Captain Quilliam entered the battle from the east and sailed towards the Admiral to assist him taking out the Conquistador frigate. Meanwhile Captain Jones pushed the Indiana Senior to her absolute fastest and successfully drew away the fleet even further from the lone Conquistador engaging the Admiral. Half-way through the ship-to-ship combat between HMS Guardian and the Spanish Conquistador, during which Captain Quilliam commendably cut across the enemy's stern raking her time and time again, Vice Admiral Walker arrived from the north.

Vice Admiral Walker arrives and assesses the situation.

The lone Conquistador frigate struck her colours roughly 3500 yards from the main part of the Spanish fleet. Vice Admiral Walker and Captain Jones sailed southwards in an attempt to regroup
with the Admiral and Captain Quilliam. Unfortunately, after having kept the Spaniards' gunners busy for over ten minutes, the Indiana Senior could take no more punishment and she was forced to ba abandoned by her Captain.

Meanwhile Vice Admiral Walker succeeded in both bringing the HMS Discovery to the Admiral and drawing away yet another Conquistador frigate. The enemy frigate was forced to strike her colours after receiving the concentrated fire of the three Navy vessels present. Both frigates were damaged but the HMS Guardian however, was so badly holed (the structural integrity being 62) that a line was then formed and the squadron withdraw to the south for brief repairs.

After repairing the Royal Navy squadron turned northwest and sailed past the enemy fleet in an attempt to yet again draw off the faster vessels. Captain Jones returned to battle with the Indiana Senior after having regrouped at Island Harbour. He entered the battle from the northeast and yet again succeeded in drawing away a large portion of the fleet. Admiral Collister and Vice Admiral Walker turned and sailed east firing continously at the mass of Spanish ships as they moved northwards to chase Captain Jones again.

After concentrating their fire on a San Mateo galleon for something towards ten minutes, Admiral Collister and Vice Admiral Walker succeeded in sinking another enemy vessel. At this point they sailed northeast, tacked and bore south through what was left of the Spanish line; a San Mateo galleon and the Hercules frigate. Captain Jones hade done admirably keeping the Valiant, Deliverance and one of the galleons occupied chasing him, but at this point of the battle he had succeeded too well! Leaving the enemy so far behind him, they had decided to turn and reinforce the Hercules instead.

Captain Quilliam, quite astonishingly, harrassed the Valiant with his 8 gunned sloop, giving Admiral Collister and Vice Admiral Walker enough time and space to sink the Hercules.

Admiral Collister passes the Hercules at a range of twenty yards. Forward on his starboard beam Captain Quilliam crosses the stern of the Valiant.

After sinking the Hercules, the Admiral and Vice Admiral engaged the Deliverance frigate, and drew her away to the west. Meanwhile Captain Jones yet again caught the attention of the two remaining galleons and kept hem occupied. However, in the process, the Indiana Senior was reduced to a structural hull integrity of 120. Signalling a shortage of repair materials, Admiral Collister sailed on an opposite course and whilst passing her successfully threw five repair packs to the damaged to ship. One was reported to have struck the head of the purser, much to the enjoyment of the crew!

Captain Quilliam, refusing to withdraw from combat with the third-rate Valiant, lured her away on a northeasterly course. It was at this stage of the battle that the Admiral of the Blue sailed in from the northwest.

The Deliverance only struck her colours after receiving heavy punishment from HMS Discovery and HMS Guardian. The two ships then sailed to regroup with Captain Jones, after which, the three Navy frigates proceeded to engage and sink the two remaining San Mateo galleons.

Meanwhile Admiral Eliblo had come to Captain Quilliam's aid and together they had succeeded in entirely dismasting the Valiant. The three frigates to the south sailed up to their position and with five Navy vessels all bearing fire upon her defenceless stern, the Spanish third-rate was forced to surrender.

The Royal Navy squadron relish in their victory as they admire the Valiant that only moments earlier had struck her colours. From left to right, excluding the dismasted Valiant, Indiana Senior, HMS Discovery, HMS Guardian, Etoile, HMS Roberts.

The victorious squadron sailed northwards to Island Harbour and celebrated their victory in the tavern.

Summary:
A small squadron of light frigates and a sloop successfully took, burnt or sank a full Spanish treasure convoy of eight sail, including one Third-Rate Ship of the Line. This was managed through a tremendous measure of persistence, courage and, most of all, seamanship.

Captain Jones had the arguably the most difficult task throughout the battle; to keep the Spanish fleet occupied while others sank the enemy's ships one by one. Not only did he skillfully lure away the enemy and evade their fire, he also managed to deal great amounts of damage to the enemy's ships as soon as the moment for such a course of action arose. He also, remarkably, sailed straight into combat with Admiral Collister alone, against their entire fleet, and did not lose heart at any point of the over seventy minute battle, not even after opening the battle right to the lee of the Spaniards.

Captain Quilliam truly excelled in the Etoile. Never before have I seen such skillful handling of a sloop! Sailing in and out of the line of combat, harrassing the enemy, engaging, disengaging, supporting damaged Navy ships and luring away the enemy, he truly was astonishingly helpful all throughout the battle. He truly showed us all what can be achieved with a vessel as small as an 8-gunned sloop.

Vice Admiral Walker yet again excelled in combat alongside myself. At several points in the battle I noted that he had already executed the order I intended on giving, sometimes only after I had given them! I cannot stress how valuable it is to have a companion in battle of such a similar frame of mind.

Finally, Admiral Eliblo displayed great accuracy of assessment, speed of decision and skill of execution in the battle. Within ten minutes of entering the battle all three masts of the Valiant had been destroyed. His arrival was as fortunate as his actions were decisive.

All in all, I do declare that this certainly deserves a toast!

To the Royal Navy!

Great Job mates!

Looking forward to more battles of the Royal Navy, especially the ones I can be part of!

They're in the "My Documents\Pirates of the Burning Sea\log" folder, but to enable chat to appear, you need to edit pirates_local.ini (in the program folder) and add the following:

[Logger]
Chat_Messages=Info

Create a pirates_local.ini with Notepad if it doesn't exist.

There are other options too that are mentioned here and there on the FLS forums, but very poorly described. Be warned that some of the settings can generate significant quantities of crap in the log.

Hope that helps Admiral!

All the best
